Liisa Savunen

Docent Liisa Savunen, PhD, is Director of the Culture and Society Research Unit at the Academy of Finland.

“Broadly speaking, I work with science policy and research administration. As Director of the Culture and Society Research Unit, I’m responsible for the unit’s operations and staff. I also work closely with the Research Council for Culture and Society. As a result, my job includes both administrative work and science policy assignments in Finland and abroad, especially in relation to the humanities and social sciences. I also participate in the Academy’s international collaborations, EU assignments and Nordic cooperation. This variety means that there’s no typical work day for me.”

“My job requires wide experience of personnel management as well as an understanding of science policy. A unit director must have a good grip on the European and Nordic research funding landscape and on the activities and profiles of universities. I’ve always been interested in science, research and science policy, so I really enjoy working in the best interest of science.”

“The Academy of Finland has all the fundamental principles and processes that are required from a good employer. We have an excellent organisational culture and personnel policy that really support our employees. The Academy also has very few organisational and hierarchical levels. While this may somewhat limit in-house career advancement opportunities, it definitely allows Academy staff constantly to develop and hone their skills.”
