Finnish Environment Institute

Are you a natural scientist with extensive networks and good language skills? Or perhaps you hold a university degree in engineering and have experience in project work? Are you looking for a meaningful job?

Why work for Syke?

The content of the work is our greatest asset. Our work benefits society and offers long-term goals. As an international research organisation, we provide our employees with an advanced research infrastructure and opportunities for training and professional growth. Although the pay and working hours are subject to regulations, we can offer flextime arrangements.

What type of competence does Syke need?

We need environmental experts from various fields, from engineering to biological and environmental sciences, natural sciences, and social sciences. A higher university education or a doctorate is considered an asset. Besides competence in a specific subject, other essential elements include skills in processes, information systems, communication, and procurement. We also appreciate problem-solving skills and the ability to work in an international environment.

What types of jobs are available?

We recruit several people every year. In many cases, the job is offered for a fixed term. Positions are offered in projects for which we receive funding from third parties. Occasionally we also offer permanent positions, but not as often as fixed-term positions.

How does Syke organise its international recruitment?

We have some international recruitment needs. The associated jobs are advertised on the governement´s common electronic website The best way to be up to date with the new vacancies is to set up a job search alert. When an announcement of a suitable position is published, the recruitment system sends a notification to the jobseeker, who can complement his/her open application already in the system to match and refer to the new vacancy. You can also send an open application to Syke, but it will not be considered when the vacancy is advertised.

How can I apply for a trainee’s position at Syke?

We have dozens of students of different fields as trainees annually. Syke hires students also from foreign institutes as trainees. This way we offer a top-sight view in the matters of expert organization in environmental science.

University students are recruited mainly through a special system for their internships. Syke units announce their trainee positions on the website for those universities from which students are wanted to apply. Announcements can be published throughout the year.

Students from universities of applied sciences (ammattikorkeakoulu) do not have same kind of unified system for applications. These students should apply directly with a free-format application. University students can also apply directly this way.

Applicants who are entitled to a bursary provided by their home university will be preferred in the recruitment of trainees.
