The Finnish Border Guard

The Finnish Border Guard is an internationally respected border security authority. The militarily organised Finnish Border Guard operates under the administrative branch of the Ministry of the Interior. The objective of our operations is to make Finnish border and sea areas the most secure border and sea areas in Europe.

Our main tasks are border control at land borders and sea areas, passenger traffic border checks at border crossings, ports and airports as well as rescue operations, especially in sea areas. The Finnish Border Guard is a leading sea rescuer and also carries out search operations and patient transportation in its surveillance areas. We also carry out police tasks and are responsible for customs control at border crossings where Finnish Customs does not operate. One of the core functions of the Finnish Border Guard is to combat cross-border crime. In addition to this, defence has always been one of the Finnish Border Guard's most important tasks.

Security is guaranteed by a reliable and professional staff.

Even though the Finnish Border Guard is a militarily organised organisation, we also employ civilian workers and offer versatile tasks to both civilians and soldiers. The range of job titles is vast and the educational background of our civilian employees is very diverse. We currently employ many civilian workers particularly in financial administration, technical fields and personnel management. We also offer good opportunities for personal competence development.

The majority of our personnel consists of border guards, who work at border crossings as, for example, border inspectors, shift managers, criminal investigators and dog handlers. Border guards who work at land borders can be, for example, Border Guard Station patrol leaders, patrol and guardsmen and dog handlers. A border guard takes care of tasks related to border surveillance, border checks on persons entering or leaving the country and other tasks related to border control. Coastguards take care of the same tasks at ports and the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport as well as Coast Guard Stations and guard boats. Both border and coastguards also take part in rescue and assistance missions and select customs control and police tasks.

The Finnish Border Guard's officers and commissioned officers serve in planning, leadership and training tasks. In addition to this, the Finnish Border Guard also employs technical specialist officers. The officers of the Finnish Border Guard are trained at the National Defence University.

Our operations span the entire country.
